Dr. John Byrne Announced as 2018 Wylie Scholar

Vascular Cures is pleased to announce Dr. John Byrne, University Health Network – Toronto General Hospital, as our 2018 Wylie Scholar. His work on “Characterization of Macrophage Biology in the Pathogenesis of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms,” will study the inflammatory process of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) development, which could improve the prediction and treatment of aortic aneurysms at high risk of a fatal rupture.

The Wylie Scholar Program, now in its 22nd year, awards one outstanding, young surgeon-scientist in North America with a $150,000 three-year career development grant for projects that combine active patient care with academic research. The award supports crucial research that enables them to compete for future research funding. Wylie Scholars become North America’s world-class vascular surgeon-scientists; many are now chiefs at major academic centers, prominent leaders in the field, and play a key role in our programs.

Coincidentally, this is also the 20th anniversary of our 1998 awardee, Dr. Barry Rubin, who hails from the same institution and is the Medical Director of the Peter Munk Cardiac Center.

Vascular Cures is a national non-profit advancing innovation in healthcare and research for diseases outside the heart. The program’s investment has generated a 24:1 return in subsequent funding for the scholars and their institutions.
